"Green" Features
Welcome to our fossil fuel free zone! Hotsprings Valley Retreat
is the first commercial venture in the North that we know of that
takes such a rigorous approach to environmental stewardship. Our
vision is to help ensure the long-term protection of the underground
thermal mineral springs that flows through the valley bottom we
are located on.
Our commitment to sustainability starts with our retreat center
site being developed with principles of perma-culture planning & design.
This resulted in a careful use of available resources to create
a sense of space and relationships that feel both magical
and inspirational.
Our main workshop center was built using an existing log barn.
It employs a variety of “green” standards: local materials,
super-insulation standards, passive solar, compact fluorescent
lighting, energy efficient appliances, thermal mass wood heat and
thermal mass heat storage. The Retreat Centre has three composting toilets to promote ecological waste handling. All garbage is sorted. The Retreat Centre participates in local recycling and composting programs. Our cleaning products are all biodegradable.
Our cabins also take a green approach. By not putting any plumbing
in them, they only require electric heat when in use -- note that
the Yukon’s electric grid uses hydro & wind power for
its production.
